Harvey Korman

Harvey Korman, best known for his role on the Carol Burnett show, passed away on Thursday. I was a big fan of the Korman and Burnett duo, as well as a third member of that show, Tim Conway. Lots of laughs.

Laugh-In Co-Founder Dies

If you never saw “Laugh-In”, you missed something great. Although I would love to see the re-runs, I suppose against today’s offerings it would seem less, but at the time it was awesome.
Dan Rowan, the other half of the team, a sailing enthusiast, spent his last years touring the canals of Europe on a houseboat. [...]

Not Fly in the Ointment; Fly in the Bottle (part 3)

If you missed parts 1 and 2 they are here (1) and here (2).
Well, the Supreme Court of Canada has swatted down the $341,775 damages award, in a 9-0 judgment. The court said Culligan of Canada Ltd. cannot be found liable for psychological damages suffered by Waddah (Martin) Mustapha because it could not have reasonably [...]

The Wild West – Electronically

Here is a modern day twist on the famous wild west shootout. Use tasers instead of pistols!
Police in Boulder Colorado say a security company supervisor and a restaurateur shot each other with tasers in a “bonehead” confrontation over parking.
The two men were arguing over a metal boot that one of the security company’s guards had [...]

Public Opinion Fiasco

Tim Horton’s worker fired after giving a free TimBit to a child.
If you have not heard about this, wow! Can you imagine being fired over a 10 cent item? Now, maybe she had been warned multiple times by the manager to stop the practice, but the news does not suggest this. The aftermath for head [...]

A New Mac – PC Ad

I love those Mac vs. PC ads. The latest one shows an unlit sign that says “Don’t Give Up on Vista”. When PC pushes a button, only the “Give Up” portion turns on. He pushes it again and the “Give Up on Vista” portion lights. Ha. I saw this one on the Globe and Mail’s [...]

Short-Sighted Stupidity

I love this quote from Eric Sager, professor of history at the University of Victoria. It is in regards to the 2006 Canadian census. Let me know what you think.
“The problem is that we have now denied to our descendants the same right to history that we grant ourselves. For 44 per cent of Canadians, [...]

Product of Canada

Previously on Grandpa Richard Speaks (don’t you love that line, that I borrowed from my favourite TV show?) An article about what constitutes a Product of Canada.
Well it was in the news again so I thought I would remind you all of my older posting, as linked above.

Availability of Childcare

Article in today’s Globe and Mail led to an active dialogue amongst readers. I loved this comment.
Parents, take this as an opportunity to nurture your own children – share the joy – live in a smaller house – have only one or no car – cancel cable TV, broadband – do whatever you need to [...]

Helping during Disasters

What is happening in Myanmar is pathetic. The military junta, afraid of losing face in front of its population, is refusing to allow disaster relief experts into the parts of the country that were badly hit by the recent cyclone. Since they do not have experts of their own, they are basically dooming hundreds of [...]
