Grocery Shopping

I stuck my head out and said I probably spend less on food than many poor people, and eat better. Here is an example of a shopping trip I took after work today.

package of salad = 3.49 less 1.00 coupon (it was almost expired) = 2.49
cucumber = 0.79
3 small tomatoes = 1.23
that will probably create 3 large salads, at about 1.50 each (large enough to be an almost complete meal for me and I have a good appetite)

4 boxes of good quality granola cereal at 2.99 each (normally over 4.00 each)
(I figured out one day that the cereal is not that bad a price, it is the milk that costs me money! so one day I tried using a watered down fruit smoothie on my cereal and it was okay)

3 packages of pork chops, 2 chops per package = 5.20 (which is 0.87 per chop) The reason for the low price is that they were almost expired and I paid about 1/2 price. A butcher once told me that I can buy these types of deals and then cook them right away and then freeze in meal size segments for warming up later.

a dozen large size eggs = 2.64; no deal on this :(

6 somewhat bad looking oranges = 0.99
6 somewhat bad looking pears = 0.99
the fruit is for fruit smoothies, where looks do not count; I regularly get old bananas that are still great for smoothies. Add 1 or 2 bananas, cup or more water, old pear, and PRESTO a good healthy (and quite filling) small meal. And good for you as well.

Total of about $26.00

enough meat for up to 6 meals
the eggs are for adding to salad (as hard boiled eggs – 12 salad’s worth)
enough cereal for at least 16 breakfasts
fruit for 6 smoothies
salad for 3 meals (along with eggs)

And I
(a) shopped at an expensive store, and
(b) did not try really hard, as I was in a hurry.
