Crime Statistics

Quite often, the actual statistics of crime rates has little bearing on society’s perception of crime rates.

Take crimes against children. Many parents are so uptight about the safety of their children that those children are seldom outside unless a parent is with them. In actual fact, rates of child abduction are actually down. Meanwhile, rates of type II diabetes and hypertension in children are up.

In 1972 (all figues from U.S. stats) 87 % of children who lived within a mile of their school walked or biked to school. In 2006, only 13 % do.

In 1972, about 5 % of children were obese. In 2006, about 15 % are.

Get your kids off the couch, away from the TV and game players, and get them outside.
