Rest in Peace

It seems that the hyphen is dying. The new edition of The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary has done away with about 16,000 hyphens.

Some examples?
– leap-frog became leapfrog
– ice-cream became ice cream

16,000! I would have never guessed that there were that many.
