Once again I have chosen to exist in a modern western society without a car.

Am I doing it to force myself to get more exercise? Partly.
Am I doing it for environmental reasons? Partly.

The main reason? To save money. Cars are almost black holes for our money. Some people spend almost as much on the family cars as on the family house. A house tends to appreciate in value. Cars tend to depreciate in value.

I tend to pick living spots and jobs based on their location to public transit. Hence, I do not find it a big deal to be without a car.

I have many more thoughts on North America’s love affair with the automobile, but I will leave it at that for now.

I do know this from previous experience. My life slows down and becomes more peaceful when I go carless.

You know… The other day while reading one of your posts where you mentioned your car, I was wondering why you need a car since you take public transit to work 5 days a week anyways… and sometimes even weekends!!! I totally agree with you.. cars costs a lot of money to have and to maintain… which is why I’m carless!
