Internet Sales Tax

There are literally thousands of different sales taxes across the United States at the state, locality, tax district (and other) levels. This makes it an atrocious system for an online retailer like to maintain. Thus, the logic in a 1992 tax case was decided in favour of out-of-state retailers and they were not required to collect.

The climate for this is changing. Maybe it is the recession and governments are looking for more revenue. But we still have the problem with so many different taxes.

It is said that the United States Congress is looking at the problem. If it was done at the national level (like the GST in Canada and some other countries) it would be very simple to implement and maintain. Then the Feds could divide up the spoils with the other levels.
