Shoplifting suspect dies after chase

In Hamilton, of all places. And he was trying to steal something from the Canadian Tire that I always went to. Eerie.

Staff claim the 20 year old was attempting to shoplift when staff (including a security guard) chased him from the store. A struggle ensued and the man ended up in the hospital – dead!

This is not the first time that Grandpa Richard has read about a case like this. One that I remember involved a man who was caught outside an electronics store with a stolen item. He resisted staff attempts to reclaim the item, and during the ensuing struggle, the thief died. My comment at the time (when the family claimed he was such a nice person and did not deserve to die) was, “If he is such a nice person, why is he stealing stuff?”

In each case, did the staff use appropriate methods to restrain the accused? Perhaps we will hear in the coming weeks.
